Intertestamental Literature and History

Course Description

The four hundred years between the close of the Old Testament and the beginning of the New Testament are fundamental for understanding the background of the New Testament. Features of the first-century context, familiar to us from the New Testament, such as synagogues, the Pharisees, and the Sadducees originated in this period. Likewise, the literature from this period illustrate the worldview and understanding of Scripture with which Jesus and the apostles interacted.
